WP 3: Governance and Transformation

WP 3 focuses on the question how to shape and organize transformations towards the sustainable use of RER. This involves, analyzing the aims of the energy transition, how to enable renewable energy provision in practice as well as the unintended side-effects of the transition (e.g., resource-energy-nexus). Core themes of the WP are spatial governance and system- and market-integration of RER. In principle, research concerns all governance levels, from the regional to the international level, and their interactions.

1. Societal processes and dynamics: Which societal processes and dynamics facilitate transformations towards the sustainable use of renewable energies and resources and how can these transformations be fostered (with special focus on the relationship/interaction of different policies, on integration of new technologies, on social practices and on environmental behavior)?
2. Policymix for the spatial organization of RER: Which (combinations of) instruments enable the spatial organization of renewable energies and resources on different spatial levels (regarding grids, electricity provision and heating as components of the energy system)? What is the impact of different Multi-Level-Governance arrangements? (Spatial analysis, WP1)
3. Governance of system- and market integration: How can the political, legal and economic framework be adapted so as to facilitate the system- and market integration of renewable energies and resources – ensuring not only efficiency and security of supply, but also distributive justice and environmental protection? (System- and market integration, WP2)
